The Providence Grays and Rhode Island Game Hens met on Saturday and Sunday, June 7 & 8th to commemorate the Grays’ victory over the New York Metropolitans in the 1884 World Championship. The games were played by the rules of 1884, which included full speed overhand pitching, without the benefit of fielder’s gloves. Providence Mayor David Ciciline threw out the first pitch on Saturday at Hope High School. The game featured a great deal of scoring on both sides, but Rhode Island prevailed with a 34-14 victory. It should be noted that this type of score is highly unusual for a Game Hens & Grays match. Defense may have suffered due to an extreme heatwave in New England this weekend.
Sunday’s game was played at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. McCoy Stadium is home of the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate Pawsox. This four-inning exhibition game featured some outstanding pitching from Jesse Lee and Joe Stracuzzi of Rhode Island. Stadium patrons were also treated to some fearless defense by both clubs. At the conclusion of the fourth and final inning Rhode Island had the victory by a 13-2 margin.

The Game Hens started the 2008 season last Saturday against the vaunted Boston Beaneaters. We once again had our troubles against Chris Sheehy, who threw an outstanding game. Our defense was a bit on the rusty side, and the Beaneaters took advantage to the tune of a 16-4 Boston victory. We look to rebound against New Hampshire next week (5/10). Though the forecast is for rain, we expect to play a full nine innings. First pitch is scheduled for 11am at the Hen House. Game Hens should meet at the field at 10am.
